As we predicted earlier this month, Tesla has finally obtained approval to deploy the Full Self-Driving (FSD) AI software to customer cars in the Netherlands. This is Tesla’s first FSD license in Europe to run FSD on customer cars. Tesla owners in Europe have been waiting for years to test Full Self-Driving technology in the region. The Dutch vehicle authority RDW analyzed and reviewed Tesla FSD for years before granting the approval. The Netherlands is also Tesla’s HQ in Europe, and RDW has been comparatively more forward-looking than the other European authorities. However, this first approval will most probably open up FSD for more countries in the near future. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced it on X, saying: First (supervised) FSD approval in Europe! Congratulations to the Tesla team and thank you to the regulatory authorities in the Netherlands for all the hard work required to make this happen. The RDW stated in its official press: Due to the continuous strict monitoring of the driver in the vehicle, the system is safer than other driver assistance systems. We have thoroughly researched and checked this system, more than a year and a half. Read complete press release below. Although FSD was not available to customers in Europe for a long time, many Tesla owners purchased it outright with their vehicles. These Tesla owners were the most eager to use Tesla’s self-driving technology and utilize their investments. Tesla has discontinued the outright purchase of Full Self-Driving for life in North America. However, the online configurator for the Netherlands shows the option to buy FSD for a one-time price of €7,500. Tesla customers from the rest of Europe can order FSD for a one-time price. However, there’s no guarantee when the FSD will be available to be used, as there are still regulations to be passed in the European Union. It can be months, and it can be years down the road. Subscription is also available as an option for €99 per month. By launching FSD in Europe, Tesla has opened a new revenue stream. Optimistic Tesla owners would want to buy it outright, while the cautious ones would want a monthly subscription because of strict regulations that can result in a temporary or permanent ban on FSD in Europe. Tesla is expected to launch the latest version of FSD in Europe, which is FSD v14.3 as of this writing. This is basically a short instruction manual and RDW’s stance on allowing Tesla to operate Full Self-Driving in the Netherlands. Explanation RDW on European type approval Tesla with provisional validity in the Netherlands April 10, 2026 – In this message you can read important information about the establishment of this type approval. The RDW has issued a type approval for Tesla’s driver’s assistance system, FSD Supervised (Full Self Driving Supervised). This driver’s assistance system has been extensively researched and tested on our test track and on public roads for more than a half years. Safety is paramount for the RDW. The proper use of this driver’s system makes a positive contribution to road safety. A vehicle with FSD Supervised is not self-driving. It is a driver’s aid system and the driver remains responsible and must always maintain control. Due to the type approval, the driver’s assistance system can now be used in the Netherlands, with possible later expansion for all member states of the European Union. Who is driving and who is responsible? A driver assistance/supports the driver in his driving duties. FSD Supervised is an advanced driver’s assistance system. This means that vehicles that use FSD Supervised can take over many driving tasks but are NOT autonomous or self-driving. The driver is supported and remains responsible. This means that he must always participate in traffic. When FSD Supervised is engaged, various sensors monitor whether the driver has his eyes on the road and his hands are available to take over the steering wheel. The hands do not have to be on the steering wheel but should be able to take over the steering wheel immediately if necessary. When the system detects that the driver is not sufficiently alert, various signals go off, requiring the driver to demonstrate to the system that he is alert. It is therefore not allowed or possible to read the newspaper behind the wheel, for example. If the driver is consistently insufficiently alert, the system will point this out to the driver by signals and, in extreme cases, ensure that the system can temporarily no longer be switched on. Safety is paramount for the RDW. This Tesla driver assistance system supports the driver more than other systems because it takes over multiple driving tasks when it is switched on. Using driver assistance systems properly makes a positive contribution to road safety because the driver is supported in his driving tasks, it is a supplement to the driver. Due to the continuous strict monitoring of the driver in the vehicle, the system is safer than other driver assistance systems. Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) disclosed its first-quarter vehicle production and delivery numbers, along with the energy storage business sales, on Thursday last week. In Q1 2026, Tesla delivered a total of 358,023 electric vehicles while producing 408,386 at its Gigafactories in the United States, China, and Germany. The US-based EV automaker sold a significantly lower number of cars than it manufactured. This means that 50,357 unsold cars rolled over to the next quarter for sales. On the battery energy storage system (BESS) front, Tesla Energy sold 8.8 GWh of energy products. This is a sharp decline of around ~15% compared to Q1 2025, when the company sold 10.4 GWh of energy storage products (home, commercial, and industrial grade battery packs). Like always, in Q1 2026, Tesla Model Y and Model 3 account for the majority of Tesla’s vehicle sales (over 95%). However, the large difference between production and deliveries suggests that Tesla sold fewer Model Y and 3 units than it anticipated. It certainly lost Tesla started the gradual phaseout of Model S and Model X production earlier this year, as we can see only 13,775 Model S, X, and Cybertruck units were produced in the first quarter. At the start of the 2nd quarter, Tesla finally ended the production of Model S and Model X at the Fremont factory. Interestingly, Tesla sold more Model S, X, and Cybertruck units than it produced, and there are still some left in inventory (S and X). Q1 2026 QoQ and YoY Comparisons Despite challenges like tariffs, the global situation, and tough competition, Tesla sold ~6% more EVs in Q1 2026 compared to the same quarter last year. In Q1 2025, Tesla sold 336,681 cars. However, last year’s first quarter was a disaster for Tesla in terms of vehicle sales, as deliveries dropped by around 15%. This year, the automaker seems to be recovering from this sales drop. Tesla does not report the sales figures of Model S, Model X, and the Cybertruck separately. The automaker categorizes it under ‘Other Models’. Interestingly, Tesla sold more Other Models in Q1 2026 than it did in the first quarter of 2025 (16,130 vs 12,881). It’s not clear if Tesla sold more Cybertrucks in Q1 2026 or more Model S/X units. Customers might have hurried to buy a Model S or Model X before production ended completely. Compared to the previous quarter, Tesla’s vehicle sales dropped slightly above 14%. In Q4 2025, Tesla delivered 418,227 cars, which is significantly more than Q1 2025 deliveries (358,023 units). The last quarter of the year is generally good in the automotive industry in terms of vehicle sales. The first quarter is the opposite, car deliveries are globally down after Christmas and New Year sales and discounts discontinue. Once again, Tesla sold more ‘Other Models’ in the first quarter of 2026 compared to Q4 2025. Another reason might be a subtle increase in Cybertruck sales. Tesla has officially discontinued the production of its luxury segment EVs, the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the automaker will be celebrating the farewell of these iconic cars in a ceremony, the date for which will be announced later. Last week, Tesla (TSLA) sent an email announcing the end of Model S and Model X production. This official announcement confirmed that a limited inventory of these luxury-segment EVs remains with the automaker. I also received this email that states: Thank You for Being Part of Their Legacy Model S and Model X marked the beginning of the world’s transition to electric transportation. These vehicles also made it possible for Tesla to develop the technology that would move our world toward autonomy. As we make way for this autonomous future, Model S and Model X production will be ending. Browse our limited inventory if you’d like to order yours (Order Model S, Order Model X). Earlier this year, Tesla announced that it will discontinue its foundational EVs, the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV. The production was scheduled to end in the 2nd quarter. The official email from the company suggests that Tesla has already closed production of the Model S and X at the Fremont factory. Tesla’s existing inventory is going to be enough to satisfy the limited demand for these electric vehicles. Tesla already announced 31st March as the deadline for ordering a Model S or X in South Korea, earlier this week. In the US, Tesla is offering slightly used and even new vehicles in its inventory. Interestingly, Tesla is offering considerable discounts on its inventory vehicles. These discounts range from $1-4K on slightly used vehicles (50 to ~2,000 miles on the odometer). There is no discount on new vehicles in the inventory. Tesla’s online car configurator is now redirecting users to the inventory website. The configurator is permanently closed for new orders. Discounts on Inventory Model S and Model X Tesla is offering interesting free perks on the last remaining Tesla Model S and X inventory vehicles. Free Premium Connectivity, Full Self-Driving, and Free Supercharging for life are included on all inventory Model S and X cars with some terms and conditions applied. Additionally, a Four-Year Premium Service is also included on most of the inventory vehicles. Basically, this is part of the Luxe Package, which is included in the price of the vehicle. Tesla has included the 21″ Velarium Wheels on several of the Model S inventory cars. These 21-inch optional wheels cost $4,500 separately if you upgrade during order placement. Multiple Tesla Cybertrucks have been spotted in an unlikely location across the North American continent — China. Chinese Tesla enthusiasts grabbed the opportunity to capture footage of these Cybertrucks roaming the city streets of China. Tesla has not yet officially launched the Cybertruck electric pickup truck in China. South Korea is the only Asian country where Tesla has put the Cybertruck on sale. Interestingly, according to national statistics on new energy vehicles (NEVs), the electric pickup truck market in China is rapidly growing. Although there is no official word on it, Tesla might want to capture a part of this growing pickup truck market in the near future by launching the Cybertruck in China. 🇨🇳A parallel importer in China is selling a large number of Cybertrucks. Coincidentally, both of the videos of these Cybertruck units were captured at crosswalks. One of the Cybertrucks (on the left in the photo above) was wrapped in matte black. The wrap on this Cybertruck is most probably performed in China. It might already be wrapped at the time of import. These Cybertrucks are not officially imported into China. Last year, a Chinese importer brought several Cybertrucks into the country and put them on sale. However, none of these Tesla Cybertruck units were wrapped at the time. All of these third-party Cybertruck imports were in their original stainless steel finish. Last year in September, Tesla showcased a Cybertruck along with a Model 3, Model Y, and the Optimus humanoid robot at the 2025 World Smart Industry Expo (WSIE). Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) launched the larger version of its Model Y electric SUV, aka Model Y L, in Australia and New Zealand today. In the last few days, Tesla enthusiasts spotted car carrier trailers transporting the new Model Y L vehicles across Australian cities and states. Photos of these trucks transporting Tesla Model Y L SUVs to their destinations were shared on X and other social media platforms. Initially, it was expected that Tesla would take some time to launch the Model Y L in Australia, but the automaker was swift to open orders for the vehicle. Tesla introduced the new 6-seat, spacious Model Y L EV SUV in China last year. This new Model Y variant addressed the needs of extended families in the region. The availability of this larger Model Y version in the Australia-New Zealand region was unexpected, but Tesla must have its reasons for the launch. Credit: Mick (@mikjcal / X). Price and Delivery Tesla has launched the Model Y L in Premium trim in Australia and New Zealand. It has a Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) drivetrain. For both countries, Tesla is showing an estimated delivery timeline of May to June 2026. Many units have already arrived in the region, so, Tesla might hand over several units before May. The following are the prices of the Model Y L Premium in Australia and New Zealand: Tesla Model Y L Premium (Australia): $74,900 (AU Dollars) Tesla Model Y L Premium (New Zealand): $83,900 (NZ Dollars) Converted to USD, the Tesla Model Y L would cost approximately $52,449 if available in the United States. For the space and seating layout it offers, the price seems reasonable. Australia’s Northern Territory (NT) has the least expensive drive-away price of the Tesla Model Y L ($78,171). Western Australia has the highest drive-away price of $82,817, including its high local stamp duty and other taxes, etc. Size and Exterior The transition from the normal Model Y to the Model Y L in the following video highlights the size and exterior differences. The Tesla Model Y L features a longer wheelbase and a bulging rear end to provide headroom for 3rd-row passengers and trunk space. The ‘L’ in its name literally denotes a ‘Long’ version of the Model Y. The larger Model Y L version completely makes sense as Tesla is phasing out production of its Model X SUV and Model S sedan this year. Tesla did not modify the front side of the vehicle. The front fascia remains the same. Only the rear is extruded (see our detailed report from the China launch). Tesla Model Y L comes with 19’’ Machina 2.0 Wheels included in the price of the vehicle. There’s no option to upgrade the wheels. Range Tesla Model Y L Premium comes with a WLTP estimated range of 681 km. This equates to approximately 583 km (362 miles) of range under the US EPA standard. Since the Model Y L is a larger vehicle, it also has a larger battery pack. Its range is unmatched in the All-Wheel Drive variants of the Model Y. Only the Model Y RWD with a range of 574 km (357 miles), available in the United States, comes close to the Model Y L’s range. The drone footage of Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, provides new insight into the production and delivery status of its Cybercab robotaxi. Around 30 Tesla Cybercabs were spotted at the Giga Texas outbound lot on Monday. All of these vehicles were parked at the lot for deliveries across several Tesla locations across the United States. Interestingly, a covered car carrier trailer was seen loading these small electric vehicles for delivery to their destinations. According to Giga Texas’s local observer Joe Tegtmeyer, these Cybercab robotaxis are engineering test units, not intended for customer deliveries. Tesla (TSLA) began the production of these Cybercab test vehicles at Giga Texas last month. Key Observations Tesla Cybercabs appearing at the Giga Texas outbound lot are early pilot production units. These engineering test units are equipped with a steering wheel, brake, and accelerator pedal. This is interesting, as Tesla has marketed the Cybercab as an autonomous robotaxi. The prototypes used for promotions don’t have a steering wheel or the brake and accelerator pedals. The video captured by Joe shows humans taking the driver’s seat in these test units and driving them onto the car carrier trailers. In the past, car teardown expert Sandy Munro predicted that Tesla would also launch a customer version of this car, probably named Model 2. These customer cars will be the most affordable Teslas and have steering wheels, but still have full autonomous capabilities to run Tesla Full Self-Driving AI. Instead of the side mirrors, blue tape is installed on both sides of these pilot production Cybercab units. This is a placeholder so that side mirrors can be installed later on. Another, less important but interesting observation is that Tesla is using specially designed car carriers to transport Cybercab vehicles. If you closely observe the videos above and below, these trailers are covered at the top. There’s also a rear cover that’s closed after the trailer is fully loaded. Sides also have curtains to completely hide these vehicles. Apparently, Tesla does not want to reveal these vehicles while they are being transported across cities and highways. The automaker is sending these Cybercabs to different cities and states for autonomous AI training and testing. An interesting video clip of Tesla and SpaceX CEO, owner of X (formerly Twitter), and the world’s richest person, Elon Musk, surfaced on social media. This short video clip shows Musk’s strategy for avoiding any interaction with mainstream media journalists and enhance hsi personal security. Journalists were waiting for Musk’s arrival outside the San Francisco courtroom on Tuesday (3rd March). A black Tesla Model S stopped, and two security staff members got out of the car, one even faking opening the door for Musk. For a long time, a black Tesla Model S has been Musk’s main personal car. So, all the cameramen focused on this car. Moments later, this vehicle proved to be a decoy. As you can see in the pic above and the video below, even the policeman stood outside Musk’s car as if he was in it. The cop actually knew the security plan. All cameras were focused on this vehicle, and the mainstream media (MSM) was ready to take some snaps of Elon Musk arriving at the court. One of the journalists can be heard saying, “There’s also the other car on the right, keep an eye on it”. Yep, his doubt was correct. Musk got out of a non-Tesla vehicle, most probably a GMC. Escorted by his security staff, Musk rushed to the courtroom from a different entrance than the one expected by the media personnel. Access was restricted to him due to a high security risk. Journalists followed Musk, but they were unsuccessful in getting a word from him. Elon Musk is a genius in engineering and tech, but this security plan shows his wits in general life. He appeared at the SF Court for the $44 billion Twitter deal trial. Even after years of acquiring Twitter and renaming it X, Musk is facing lawsuits related to this historic deal. Not so long ago, Musk used to casually give interviews to the media and even meet his fans in the streets. However, as time passed, his involvement with the Twitter & X deal and later on politics resulted in increased security threats. Now you can only interact with him on X if you’re really lucky. The French beverage company UniBev surprised Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) when last year it rushed to register the ‘CYBERCAB’ name as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). UniBev registered the ‘CYBERCAB’ trademark soon after the Tesla Robotaxi unveiling event, ‘We, Robot’ at Warner Bros. Studios last year. The Tesla team wasn’t expecting this and later found out that the French company held the trademark. UniBev’s owners are most probably trying to cash out on this trademark by getting a monetary offer from Tesla. However, the automaker chose a different route; it challenged UniBev’s squatting of the Cybercab nomenclature with the USPTO Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). According to the opposition document (Opposition No. 91305433) published on the USPTO website, Tesla filed for the opposition of the Cybercab trademark on Wednesday, 18th February. On Tuesday, 24th February, the USPTO sent the notice of Tesla’s challenge and trial date to UniBev. An answer is due from UniBev on Tesla’s opposition. UniBev, as we previously discussed, is a beverage company. It has nothing to do with the automotive company and does not plan to ever launch a vehicle named Cybercab. Interestingly, it’s the same company that holds the Teslaquila, Cybertaxi, and the Cyberquad trademarks as well. This French beverage company is literally stalking Tesla and squatting every possible vehicle name it can to bargain for a good deal with the automaker. UniBev does not realize that Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, don’t give in to this sort of extortion. Thus, Tesla has challenged UniBev’s holding of the Cybercab trademark. UniBev has 60 days to respond to USPTO’s notice of Tesla’s opposition to the Cybercab trademark. If the defendant fails to respond within the given time period, USPTO reserves the right to cancel and re-assign the trademark to Tesla, Inc. (TSLA). In this case, UniBev is the ‘Applicant,’ and Tesla is the ‘Defendant’. The USPTO notice document states: Applicant must file an answer within sixty (60) days from the date of this order. Failure to file a timely answer may result in the entry of default judgment and abandonment of the application. Grounds for Opposition In its 167-page opposition file (PDF here), Tesla presented the Cybertruck word and design marks as the basis for its opposition to UniBev’s registration of the Cybercab trademark in bad faith (trademark squatting). Since Tesla is already using the word ‘Cyber’ for its vehicle lineup, UniBev acquired the trademark to extort the automaker. Tesla is already selling the Cybetruck name and wordmark with previously registered trademarks. Tesla also presented the screenshots and proofs of the widespread coverage of the We, Robot event, where the automaker unveiled the Cybercab/Robotaxi vehicle. Tesla did what its CEO, Elon Musk, predicted. Today, the electric automaker increased the price of the base Cybertruck Standard AWD by $10,000. As we reported earlier, Tesla received a significant number of orders for its newly introduced Cybertruck AWD variant. This rush of orders even pushed the delivery date of the new base variant by a few months. However, Tesla stood its ground on increasing the price of the Cybertruck AWD lower-end trim. Starting March 1st, the Cybertruck Standard AWD is priced at $69,990. On social media, especially Musk’s X, Tesla is receiving criticism for this price hike move, even by its long-time customers and enthusiasts. The automaker only kept the price of the Cybertruck AWD at $59,990 for just 10 days. For the majority of potential Cybertruck customers, the 10-day period to make such a big purchase decision was not enough. Despite getting an increase in sales figures, Tesla raised the price of the base Cybertruck. At the price tag of $59,990, the Cybertruck Standard AWD offered the most value for money. It also had a reasonable number of features that convinced customers buy it instead of the Cybertruck Premium AWD variant, which costs a hefty $79,990. For a big difference of $20K, Cybertruck buyers were getting enough bells and whistles in their electric pickup truck to be convinced and place an order. Tesla is most probably going to get a major sales hit after raising the price of the new Cybertruck AWD to $69,990. This is the same price tag that failed last year’s Cybertruck RWD variant, and the automaker discontinued its sales. Tesla did not share the number of orders it received during the 10-day Cybertruck Standard AWD price offer of $59,990. Since the deliveries of the new Cybertruck AWD will begin in June, and Model S/X sales are going to discontinue in the next quarter, we will get an idea of the Cybertruck Standard delivery numbers in the Q2 2026 delivery report. Even the company’s most loyal followers aren’t happy with the decision to increase the base Cybertruck’s price by $10K. Tesla locked in Cybertruck orders for a $250 non-refundable fee. Because FSD transfers have already closed, it is possible that a percentage of these orders wouldn’t convert into actual Cybertruck purchases. In the long run, this decision is most probably not going to go in Tesla’s favor. The sudden price increase has lured away potential customers and infuriated the existing ones who were still deciding on an upgrade or new purchase of the Cybertruck AWD at $60K. Tesla must have thin margins on the $59,990 Cybertruck. It still received enough orders to keep production up at Giga Texas for the rest of the year. Tesla (TSLA) officially ended the outright buying of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) AI software on Saturday, 14th February. However, the automaker is still offering it with the purchase of a new Model S, Model X, or the top-end Cybertruck, aka the Cyberbeast. Last year in August, Tesla bundled some premium features and FSD for Model S and X. The automaker called this bundle the ‘Luxe Package’. However, the Luxe Package wasn’t optional, and the prices of each variant of the Model S premium EV sedan and Model X luxury electric SUV were raised by $10,000. The price of FSD at the time was $8,000 alone (also the last price before discontinuation). During the Q4 and full year 2025 Earnings Call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company will discontinue the production of the Model S and Model luxury segment EVs in the 2nd quarter of 2026. So, if you plan to buy a Model S or X, you only have a few months left. The exciting part is that you get Full Self-Driving (FSD) at no extra cost. The price of the standard Cybertruck All-Wheel Drive variant does not include FSD. Tesla is offering it included in the price of the Tri-Motor Cyberbeast version. The current prices of Model S, Model X, and Cyberbeast that include FSD are: Tesla Model S AWD: $94,990 Tesla Model S Plaid: $$109,990 Tesla Model X AWD: $99,990 Tesla Model X Plaid: $114,990 Cybertruck Cyberbeast: $114,990 The downside of FSD is that it’s tied to a vehicle, instead of the owner’s Tesla Account. Normally, if you sell a Tesla vehicle that has FSD enabled, the AI self-driving software also goes to the new owner along with it. To tackle this problem, Tesla offers FSD Transfers from time to time. As the automaker has moved to a subscription-only pricing model for the most part, the company has decided to end free FSD transfers soon. If Tesla decides to get rid of the FSD Transfers Program forever, you’ll have to let go of the FSD software along with the Model S, X, or Cyberbeast when you sell the vehicle in the future. However, Tesla has confirmed that it will consider FSD as a pricing factor when trading in older Teslas that have FSD installed for the life of the vehicle. According to Tesla, as of this date, Tesla FSD has driven a total of 7.7 billion miles autonomously. Out of these 7.7 billion miles, more than 2.8 billion miles are driven on city streets (mostly in the US & Canada). Insurance provider Lemonade, Inc. (NYSE: LMND) is luring Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) customers to sign up for its insurance services by offering a unique discount. For Tesla owners using Full Self-Driving (FSD) on their cars, Lemonade is offering a 50% discount on insurance premiums. “Driving is changing. Insurance should too,” says their dedicated web page for Tesla FSD users. Currently, the offer is only available in the state of Oregon (OR). Lemonade is giving a 50% discount on every mile driven on FSD. Their official website states: Tesla Full Self-Driving is twice as safe, so Lemonade takes 50% off every mile driven with FSD. That means lower premiums for you and safer roads for everyone. This is the first time a third-party insurance provider included driving behavior as a premium calculation factor. Tesla’s own insurance service factors in both human and FSD driving to calculate premiums. However, Tesla Insurance offers only a 10% discount for safe driving behavior and the use of FSD. With each new update, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving AI technology is getting better at navigating city streets and highways. Lemonade, on the other hand, is giving an exceptional discount of up to 50%. Tesla owners can avail this offer by using their cars on FSD for the most part. The insurance provider believes Tesla’s self-driving tech is twice as safe as that of a human driver. The New York-based insurance provider also shared the following graph of its insurance price vs other providers in the context of Tesla FSD’s improvement over time. Starting from FSD v14.2 (2025.38.9.5) software update, Tesla added a new Self-Driving Stats feature to its cars. The automaker made it easy for drivers and owners to know how many miles they have driven on FSD out of the total miles driven. This feature allows third-party providers to easily see individual car data. If a customer is driving their Tesla on FSD most of the time, the cost of their car insurance is going to be significantly lower. According to Lemonade’s website, the company only charges for miles driven, and FSD miles are priced at 50%. Tesla Insurance also calculates miles each month. Based on the number of total miles driven on FSD, Tesla calculates the next month’s payment. Tesla Insurance is currently only available in Florida, Texas, and Arizona. A Tesla Cybercab robotaxi prototype spotted in the wild demonstrates how its butterfly doors work. A short video shows us how to open the door because there are no door handles on the vehicle. Tesla chose to use butterfly doors for its smaller Cybercab / Model 2 autonomous EV platform. Before the Cybercab, such a type of doors were only seen on supercars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Tesla has integrated them into its most affordable car in the lineup. At the Cybercab unveiling event on 10th October 2024, Elon Musk rode the vehicle to the stage. The live stream of the event showed him entering the vehicle, and the door closed automatically. Cybercab prototypes are currently under testing by Tesla employees. This specific prototype was spotted in the wild around Austin, Texas. Tesla is gradually moving to handle-less doors for its future vehicles. Cybertruck also does not have traditional door handles. The automaker has given two buttons on the B and C pillars to open the doors electromechanically (video demo here). However, there is no visible button on the two-door Cybercab’s rear pillar or window. The person entering the Cybercab, however, did press something on the pillar/window. After looking at it closely, it appears that the person scanned his finger or performed a swipe. Next-gen Tesla Roadster prototypes feature a swipe-down function to open the doors of the vehicle. Tesla might have integrated that idea into the Cybercab. It looks like the door either closes automatically once the seat is occupied or there is a digital button on the center touchscreen to close it. However, the electric automaker has improved build quality and finish in recent years. The video of the Cybercab sighting in the wild (above) also revealed some panel gaps and misalignments. These faults immediately caught the attention of Tesla critics on social media. However, since this is just a prototype vehicle, panel gaps and build quality issues should be expected. Tesla will iron out these quality issues on production versions of the Cybercab robotaxi vehicles. Tesla hasn’t started production of the Cybercab yet, but crash safety testing of multiple Cybercab prototypes was performed at Giga Texas in late December. Tesla is planning to start the production of the Cybercab robotaxi prototypes at Giga Texas in 2026.
